Monodromy and irreducibility of Igusa varieties

Abstract: In joint work with Pol van Hoften, we determine the irreducible components of Igusa varieties for Shimura varieties of Hodge type. In this talk, I will explain our strategy which combines work of D’Addezio on monodromy of compatible local systems with a generalisation of a method of Hida. Our approach is completely different from that in the recent work of Kret and Shin, whose proof uses harmonic analysis and automorphic forms.
